SUMMARY:Res Naturae
DESCRIPTION:Can we continue to consciously inhabit a world that overwhelms and consumes us\, or does the act of stopping to reflect open up the possibility of a new relationship with nature and with ourselves? \nThe collective exhibition Res Naturae\, from the Latin for ‘things of nature’\, takes its cue from this question. Today\, nature can no longer be viewed as a static backdrop or a reality separate from humankind; rather\, it is a dynamic web of relationships\, in which the biological\, technological and cultural spheres continuously influence one another. \nIn her book The Posthuman (2013)\, Italian-Australian philosopher Rosi Braidotti invites us to radically rethink the very idea of ‘human’\, calling into question the legacy of Western humanism\, which has long defined the human being as a central entity\, separate from the rest of the living world. Hence the concept of zoe: a life force that flows through every form of existence (human\, animal\, environmental\, natural or technological) in a shared\, non-hierarchical current that unites all living beings. Women and men are nomadic beings who form part of a vast network of relationships that includes other forms of life. \nIn the exhibition\, the animal world is not defined as a mere iconographic subject\, but as a field of enquiry through which to examine the forms of life and their transformations. adaptation\, disappearance and reinvention\, these artistic works construct three distinct variations of the same imaginary ecosystem\, in which species hybridise\, dissolve or re-form into new forms of life. \nThe work of Stefano Zaratin (Mestre\, 1962) explores a radical vision of a dystopian future in which nature transforms itself to survive a hostile environment: plants and living forms adapt\, mutate and redefine themselves\, ultimately giving rise to new imaginary taxonomies that challenge the boundaries between species. Often sourced from recycled materials\, concrete\, wood\, plastic and paper play a central role in Zaratin’s work\, serving as vehicles for stories and transformations\, and directly fuelling the creative process. His works frequently depict a short circuit between the natural and the artificial: polluting materials that evoke pristine environments\, salvaged items that take on artefact-like qualities\, and organic shapes that oscillate between adaptation and subjugation. Nature thus appears as an ambivalent space: fragile yet still vital. His scientific background strongly influences his attention to detail\, his unhurried pace and careful observation of nature: the result is an approach that combines analytical curiosity with a poetic quality. \nThe language of Hadeel Azeez (Baghdad\, 1981) unfolds through images that appear as hybridisations of species and forms\, in which drawing becomes a hypothesis for new possibilities of existence\, particularly in relation to contemporary environmental transformations. Her style\, both gesture and abstraction\, occupies a threshold between East and West: thousands of micro-strokes construct surfaces that evoke organic structures\, as if the image were being observed at the cellular level. At the heart of her creative exploration lies a reflection on the relationship between form and nature\, particularly through the world of ornithology and the bird as a symbol of freedom\, balance and adaptation. She interweaves beings that are different from one another\, as if to create a new species\, in a process akin to that of the mind. The result is a sort of ‘mental Cubism’\, in which shapes continually overlap and recombine\, generating new nuances of reality. \nIn the works of Alice Olimpia Attanasio (Milan\, 1985) too\, the primary choice of subjects are birds\, observed through an almost contemplative lens. Embroidery and stitched details overlay the images\, accentuating a sense of fragility and transience\, in which the subjects appear immersed in a gradually dissolving environment. The result is a hybrid vision of life\, poised between what endures and what risks disappearing under the impact of human intervention. While remaining true to reality\, the images do not aim at mere reproduction\, but at a sensitive and aesthetic reinterpretation of it. The practice of embroidery also becomes a meditative exercise\, bringing together elements of painting\, sculpture and installation – hallmarks of multidisciplinary artistic practice – and transforming the process itself into an act of attention and care. Enabling nature to be revealed in its most fragile yet\, at the same time\, most essential form. The use of desaturated palettes and pastel tones helps to create a rarefied\, suspended atmosphere: this gives rise to imagery that evokes natural habitats and an almost dreamlike mood\, where even the most ordinary subjects take on a symbolic and poetic dimension. \nMoving on from these reflections\, the focus broadens and shifts from the animal to the environment that surrounds it. Here\, nature becomes an opportunity for contemplation: our gaze slows down\, pausing on what remains\, on what changes\, and on what is gradually disappearing. In this state of suspension\, absences and memories emerge\, inviting us to rethink the way we inhabit the world. \nIndeed\, the work of Noemi Cammareri (Pisa\, 1997) focuses on nature understood as an indispensable presence and an active interlocutor. Being far removed from her native landscape gradually brings a sense of absence to the artist’s intuition. Her adopted lagoon environment thus becomes a potential alternative means of connection: the water of the canals\, with its reflection and movement\, becomes a space for observation and pictorial experimentation. In Cammareri’s imagination\, the terrestrial realm – tied to memory – and the aquatic world – of the present – merge and intertwine. This superimposition prompts a profound reflection on our relationship with the environment: what is constantly present tends to be taken for granted\, only to prove essential when it is absent. Elements such as water\, sometimes evoked\, become signs of an absence\, alluding to a state of progressive loss and depletion of natural resources. \nWith Christian Basetti (Erba\, 1979)\, the focus shifts from nature to human-made spaces. In this case\, contemplation is linked to architecture dating back to the Risorgimento period\, viewed as evidence of a past steeped in memory and identity. Basetti’s photographs explore the abandoned\, where human presence lingers on in the form of ruins\, and vegetation slowly reclaims the land. Light transforms these spaces into suspended scenes\, where loss and rebirth coexist\, suggesting a continuity that transcends the distinction between the built environment and nature. The result is a practice that combines a spirit of adventure with aesthetic exploration\, placing a strong emphasis on light and the visual dimension of decay. This approach prioritises the aesthetic and atmospheric over the documentary\, with the aim of restoring a forgotten beauty and awakening a renewed perspective on Italy’s architectural heritage. \nThe traces of human intervention represent a fragile balance. The focus then shifts to the relationship between humankind and the environment\, focusing on the duality of the use and abuse of natural resources. \nIn this vein\, the sculptural practice of Diego Asperges (Milan\, 1958) combines wooden structures and resin elements\, bringing works to life that blend materiality with a critical reflection on contemporary production models. His work addresses the theme of consumerism\, understood as a pervasive system that encompasses not only the consumption of goods but also the transformation and depletion of environmental resources. Seen in this light\, the production process becomes a continuous loop of accumulation and disposal\, where everything created is destined to become waste at the outset. The dialogue between wood and plastic thus becomes emblematic: on the one hand\, an organic material; on the other\, an artificial material that embodies the excesses of production as well as being difficult to dispose of\, contributing to the accumulation of waste and environmental pollution. \nThe work of Sofia Fresia (Genoa\, 1992) draws on direct experiences and a deep connection with the local area\, evoking scenes that hover between wonder and unease. The natural landscape\, particularly that of the mountains\, is interwoven with autobiographical elements such as swimming – an experience of redemption and self-rediscovery – giving rise to a visual language in which personal and collective dimensions coexist. Reinterpreted in a symbolic and surrealist key\, these references become a tool for reflecting on the contradictions of the present: on the one hand\, the individual’s sense of inadequacy in a fast-paced and unstable world; on the other\, the growing awareness of the environmental crisis. Fresia nevertheless offers a form of hope: through the use of vibrant colours\, she invites us to believe in a source of light\, even in times of uncertainty. But\, given the instability of the present\, is it truly possible to find a glimmer of hope? \nRes Naturae thus challenges us to reflect on what happens when the boundaries between the human and the ‘non-human’ become blurred. In this suspended space\, the quest for a possible balance with nature – no longer seen as something to be dominated\, but as a living entity with which to enter into symbiosis – becomes a necessary act of resistance. Through a variety of languages and perspectives\, the exhibition does not present a single\, unified vision of nature\, but rather reflects its complexity\, inviting us to reconsider how we live within it. In this liminal space\, where boundaries become fluid\, the possibility of a renewed equilibrium no longer depends on control or distance\, but on a more attentive\, mindful and reciprocal relationship. \n  \nCritical text by Sofia De Pascali

DESCRIPTION:“No sooner had the warm liquid\, and the crumbs with it\, touched my palate than a shudder ran through my whole body\, and I stopped\, intent upon the extraordinary changes that were taking place”. \n(Marcel Proust\, Swann’s Way\, 1913) \nIt is often a single detail that triggers a revelation. In Marcel Proust’s famous madeleine scene\, a simple gesture\, such as biting into a cake after dipping it in tea\, acts as a sensory amplifier capable of triggering\na whole universe of images and emotions. \nFragments unfolds in this liminal perceptual space\, where what is ambiguous\, discontinuous and partial continues to challenge our gaze and mind. \nFor the first time ever\, SAC is opening its doors to the public with a two-person exhibition. Silvia Beltrami and Giuseppe Gallace\, previous visitors to this space as part of previous group exhibitions\, are now participating in a direct exchange\, a visual dialogue in which their sensibilities interweave and reflect off of one another. \nSilvia Beltrami’s research (Rome\, 1974) moves within a shattered\, unstable and never fully graspable reality. Right from the beginning\, she chose collage as her preferred form of communication – as not just a simple compositional technique but a critical gesture through which images are dismantled\, decontextualised and reconstructed. In her most recent works\, Beltrami intertwines collage techniques with the fresco strappo practice\, during which the surface layer of a wall is removed and transferred onto a new support with the help of plant-based glues and a light canvas (calico). The wall\, understood as a site of historical stratification\, is thus physically removed from its original context to become an artwork\, while keeping it physically intact and at the same time evoking the visual effect of a torn poster. Far from being lost\, the fragment becomes a generative element: a portion of reality that\, removed from its own time and space\, opens up new possibilities of meaning. The figures that inhabit Beltrami’s works convey a precarious human condition\, marked by prejudice\, control and lack of communication. The deconstructive process creates new life\, and it is this gesture that is the most fundamental and authentic aspect of Beltrami’s practice. The artist relies on the theory of Deconstructionism elaborated by Jacques Derrida\, according to which it is necessary to dismantle consolidated concepts and structures to reveal their fragility and contradictions\, in order to demonstrate that meanings are constantly evolving. \nGiuseppe Gallace (Soverato\, 1993) rejects linear narratives in order to embrace a stratified\, visually and imaginatively ambiguous style. His research is presented as a field open to interpretation based on an intimate relationship with the art of painting. For the artist\, the canvas is a surface on which past and present\, surface and substance coexist without perspective hierarchies. Gallace situates his research in the sphere of Magical Realism\, interpreted as an artistic and literary approach that blends the everyday with fantastic elements\, making what appears ordinary extraordinary; creating an unstable threshold between reality and the imagination\, where images maintain an apparent formal stillness but are infused with a subtle and restless tension. In his most recent works\, Gallace highlights floral elements that\, just like visible elements\, pierce the painterly surface\, thereby revealing the layer’s from which the painting is constructed. The fragile forms\, on the verge of bending or breaking\, inhabit a state of latent tension\, suspended between the childlike representation of a flower and a feeling of inhospitality. The contrast between the typical illusion of childhood and the disillusionment of youth clearly expresses the intermingling of sensitivity and restlessness that characterises Gallace’s work\, where the outward appearance suggestive of a fairy tale is continually interrupted by fragments of canvas that break the spell. \nWithin this dialogue\, the fragment asserts itself as a form of possibility. The works of Beltrami and Gallace inhabit a hybrid territory where what’s real\, though shattered\, remains alive. \nCritical text by Sofia De Pascali \n

DESCRIPTION:“Ma nel momento stesso in cui quel sorso\, mescolato alle briciole del dolce\, toccò il mio palato\, trasalii\, attento a ciò che accadeva di straordinario in me”.  \n(Marcel Proust\, Dalla parte di Swann\, 1913)  \nSpesso è un dettaglio a innescare un’esperienza di rivelazione. Nel celebre episodio della madeleine di Marcel Proust\, un gesto semplice\, come addentare un dolce\, dopo averlo immerso nel tè\, agisce da amplificatore sensoriale in grado di far riemergere un intero universo di immagini ed emozioni.  \nFrammenti si sviluppa in questo spazio percettivo liminale\, dove ciò che è ambiguo\, discontinuo e parziale\, continua a interrogare lo sguardo e la mente.  \nSAC apre le sue porte al pubblico\, per la prima volta\, con una mostra bipersonale. Silvia Beltrami e Giuseppe Gallace\, già presenti nello spazio in precedenti esposizioni collettive\, sono ora protagonisti di un confronto diretto\, un dialogo visivo in cui le loro sensibilità si intrecciano e si rispecchiano.  \nLa ricerca di Silvia Beltrami (Roma\, 1974) si muove all’interno di una realtà frantumata\, instabile e mai pienamente afferrabile. Fin dagli esordi il collage si afferma come suo linguaggio privilegiato: non una semplice tecnica compositiva\, ma un gesto critico attraverso cui l’immagine viene smontata\, decontestualizzata e ricostruita. Nei lavori più recenti Beltrami intreccia il collage alla pratica dello strappo d’affresco: tecnica che consiste nella rimozione dello strato superficiale della parete che\, grazie all’uso di colle vegetali e di una tela leggera (calicot)\, viene staccata e trasferita su un nuovo supporto. Il muro\, inteso come luogo di stratificazione storica\, viene così fisicamente sottratto al suo contesto originario per diventare opera\, mantenendo intatta la propria corporeità e al tempo stesso evocando l’effetto visivo di un manifesto strappato. Il frammento\, lungi dall’essere una perdita\, si fa elemento generativo: una porzione di realtà che\, sottratta al proprio tempo e spazio\, apre a nuove possibilità di senso. Le figure che abitano le opere di Beltrami restituiscono una condizione umana precaria\, segnata da pregiudizi\, controllo e incomunicabilità. Decostruire per dare nuova vita: è in questo gesto che la pratica di Beltrami trova il proprio nucleo più autentico. L’artista si affida alla teoria del Decostruzionismo\, elaborata da Jacques Derrida\, secondo cui è necessario smontare concetti e strutture consolidate per rivelarne la fragilità e le contraddizioni\, mostrando come i significati siano in continua trasformazione.   \nGiuseppe Gallace (Soverato\, 1993) rifiuta la narrazione lineare per aprirsi a un’ambiguità stratificata\, visiva e immaginifica. La sua ricerca si presenta come un campo aperto alle interpretazioni\, fondato su un rapporto intimo con la pittura. Per l’artista la tela è una superficie in cui passato e presente\, crosta e polpa convivono senza gerarchie prospettiche. Gallace colloca la propria ricerca nella sfera del Realismo Magico\, inteso come approccio artistico e letterario che fonde il quotidiano con elementi fantastici\, rendendo straordinario ciò che appare ordinario; una soglia instabile tra realtà e immaginazione\, in cui le immagini mantengono un’apparente quiete formale ma sono attraversate da una tensione sottile e inquieta. Nei lavori più recenti Gallace fa affiorare elementi floreali che\, come tracce materiali\, squarciano la superficie pittorica rendendo visibile la stratificazione del dipinto. Le forme\, fragili e sul punto di piegarsi o rompersi\, abitano una condizione di tensione latente\, sospesa tra la rappresentazione infantile del fiore e una sensazione di inospitalità. Il dualismo tra l’illusione tipica dell’infanzia e la disillusione della giovinezza esprime con chiarezza l’ibridazione tra delicatezza e inquietudine che caratterizza il lavoro di Gallace\, dove l’apparenza suggerisce una favola continuamente interrotta da frammenti di tela che ne incrinano l’incanto.  \nAll’interno di questo dialogo\, il frammento si afferma come forma di possibilità. Le opere di Beltrami e Gallace abitano un territorio ibrido in cui il reale\, pur frantumato\, resta vivo.  \n   \nTesto critico di Sofia De Pascali \n

DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features the artworks of the first prize winners and the artist residencies of the Young Artists\, under 35 and Well-known Artists\, over 35 categories. The winner of the first prize for Young Artists is Yirong Wu who won the title thanks to the artwork “Reproduction of the model” (mixed media\, 2024). In the Well-known Artists category\, Simone Miccichè was awarded the work “WOVEN BODY_TALLIT” (oil on canvas\, 2024). On display\, in addition to the canvases of the first prize winners\, there are artworks created during the artist residencies\, assigned by the jury composed of Nicoletta Candiani\, owner and curator of SAC\, Elisabetta Roncati and Ernesto Morales. Winners of the artist residencies in the Young Artists category are Flavia Bucci and Camilla Riscassi\, and in the Well-known Artists category Luigi Coppola and Matteo Suffritti. \nThe Luigi Candiani Prize was established in 2022 in memory of the great-grandfather of the owner and curator of SAC\, who had established a textile factory in 1938 where the contemporary art space stands.

DESCRIPTION:Since 2019\, SAC has built its identity as a constantly evolving workshop.\nEach exhibition has represented a stage in an open-ended process; the collection now on display offers the opportunity to observe what has been generated over time\, before the process continues to transform – almost as if the workshop paused for a moment\, in a break that restores value.\nThe works on display\, in their diversity\, have helped define the character of the space: a layered identity\, continually reshaped through practice. This exhibition is an exercise in active memory\, a survey of the paths and research that have crossed SAC over the years.\nThe collection\, like a collective portrait\, bears witness to authentic relationships with the place and the people. Works were selected according to three main criteria: a representative work chosen from each solo exhibition; winning works of the first Luigi Candiani Prize from the first and second editions; and site-specific works created by the artists awarded the artist residencies.\nAs for the solo exhibitions\, the exhibition itinerary opens with QR by Lucrezia Minerva\, a canvas created at the end of the pandemic that reflects on the QR code\, an indispensable tool of that period. Impact by Diego Asperges\, which invites the observer to dwell on the current condition of Planet Earth\, a victim of exploitation and atrocity. La grande fabbrica di tessuti (“The large textile factory”) by Francesco Quadri\, an unpublished work\, donated by the artist and created on a Japanese Moleskine notebook: a visual translation of what\, according to the author\, took place within the original space linked to weaving. With Creazione\, Erica Conti leads the viewer to visualise the body in its dual nature: inner and outer\, carnal and spiritual. Francesca\, by Giuseppe Barilaro\, is a figure on wood not immediately recognisable due to scratches and the treatment of the material\, inviting visual reinterpretation. With Scultura organica fluo (“Fluorescent organic sculpture”)\, Francesco Damiani creates solid and empty forms\, suspended and light geometries\, using cellulose paste\, rubber\, and wood. The subjects of Elena Monzo’s Autumn Zoo collage seem to come from another world\, floating and dancing in twisted poses. Alessandro Negri\, with Frutti maturi (“Ripe fruits”) uses painterly gestures to create tangles reminiscent of nature: branches and roots intertwine and knot around the fruit in continuous motion. La ragazza col melograno\, (“The girl with the pomegranate”) a paper sculpture by Vittorio Iavazzo\, tells the myth of Persephone\, forced to remain in the Underworld after eating six pomegranate seeds\, causing the cycle of the seasons. Ernesto Morales\, with Clouds XXVIII\, explores the ephemerality of clouds\, capturing their mutability as a metaphor for the human condition. \nRegarding the works of the winners of the first edition of the Luigi Candiani Prize (2022/2023)\, we encounter Telememoria by the Zeroscena collective (Luka Bagnoli and Elisa La Boria with Silvia Francis Berry)\, a video work reflecting on memory treated as an object: to be mended and remembered. Ibridazione (“Hybridisation”) by Stefano Zaratin is a warning: pay attention to the planet. The animal world is forced to lose its natural essence in order to adapt to the dystopian transformation already underway. With Dry – cleaning machine\, Giampaolo Parrillaimagines a dry-cleaning shop where the bodies of Ukrainian refugees are hung like clothes: those who retain their body after cleaning will hang on racks\, those who lose it\, from the ceiling. Asako Hishiki creates a series of Japanese woodcuts: Il viaggio #1 (“Journey #1”)\, in particular\, reflects on the theme of travel\, through the element of water. \nAmong the works of the winners of the second edition of the Luigi Candiani Prize (2023/2024)\, we find Yirui Fang\, with Vulcanico (“Volcanic”)\, which\, through the material use of oil\, represents tongues of fire that create vortices all over the canvas. Through the mythical figure of Morpheus\, the god of dreams\, Asya Magnaterra\, with L’abbraccio di Morfeo (“The embrace of Morpheus”)\, accompanies the viewer into their deepest unconscious\, in search of the true nature of being.Sanda Skujina\, inspired by the primordial gestures of her two-year-old daughter\, creates Scarabocchi: marks that reveal an authentic language devoid of superstructures. Giuseppe Gallace\, with La passeggiata (“The walk”)\, investigates the feeling of solitude linked to absence\, depicting figures suspended in a desert landscape. With Un attimo prima (“A moment before”)\, Angelo Farina shows how worry\, alienation\, and waiting can halt not only time but also the soul of those experiencing them. \nThrough this exhibition\, SAC asserts the power of layering and preservation\, realised as a curatorial act of restitution and reinterpretation: an attempt to make works created at different times converse with one another\, revealing unexpected connections and reactivating a collective memory. SAC renews its commitment to expand the collection and to build new dialogues\, paving the way for future shared narratives. \nSofia De Pascali

DESCRIPTION:Ernesto Morales\, in the exhibition “Di nuvole e di soglie” (“Of clouds and thresholds”) presents two of his most well-known series\, previously displayed in international museums: “Clouds” and “Places.” These oil-on-canvas paintings deeply reflect his artistic and conceptual exploration of the last decade. Through “Clouds”\, Morales explores the fluidity and ephemerality of clouds\, capturing their transformation and mutability as a metaphor for the human condition and the impermanence of life itself. In contrast\, the series “Places” focuses on representations of locations\, often intertwining memory and perception through the use of colours and compositions that evoke emotions and memories.

In contrast\, the series “Places” focuses on representations of locations\, often intertwining memory and perception through the use of colours and compositions that evoke emotions and memories. \n  \nBIOGRAPHY\nErnesto Morales was born in 1974 in Montevideo\, Uruguay\, and began his artistic career in Buenos Aires\, where he lived until 2006\, before moving to Europe. After an initial period in Paris\, he established his studio in Italy\, initially in Rome and since 2011 in Turin.\nOver the last twenty years\, his artistic research has led him to create exhibitions in international museums and galleries in Europe\, America and South-East Asia. Between 2009 and 2025 he institutionally represented Italy\, Argentina and Uruguay with a series of important personal exhibitions. In 2019 his retrospective “Mindscapes” was inaugurated in New York at the Consulate General of the Argentine Republic. In 2023 he created the exhibition “Come sia luce” in dialogue with the work of Lucio Fontana at the La Crescentina Foundation\, in Piedmont\, Italy\, and from November 2024 to February 2025 he will hold his exhibition “The beginning and the light” at the Rothko Museum in Latvia.
