SUMMARY:Of clouds and thresholds
DESCRIPTION:Ernesto Morales\, in the exhibition “Di nuvole e di soglie” (“Of clouds and thresholds”) presents two of his most well-known series\, previously displayed in international museums: “Clouds” and “Places.” These oil-on-canvas paintings deeply reflect his artistic and conceptual exploration of the last decade. Through “Clouds”\, Morales explores the fluidity and ephemerality of clouds\, capturing their transformation and mutability as a metaphor for the human condition and the impermanence of life itself. In contrast\, the series “Places” focuses on representations of locations\, often intertwining memory and perception through the use of colours and compositions that evoke emotions and memories.

SUMMARY:Poli
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition can be thought of as a complex organism\, a set of elements that collaborate to convey a thought of a different nature\, whether critical\, philosophical\, or moral. When there are multiple points of view\, in the case of collective exhibitions\, it is obvious how\, in order to convey a univocal message and one that is in harmony\, a nucleus is needed around which the artists gravitate\, like a vortex around its eye. \nSAC presents the group exhibition Poli\, collecting the works of 20 artists who during their career have exhibited at the Maelström Gallery at via Ciovasso 17 in Milan. The exhibition focuses on the memory of Luca Poli\, a gallery owner and figure in contemporary art who conducted his work\, together with Rita Marziani\, trying to attract creators and consumers of contemporary art into his space\, with the hope of transmitting the fascinating complexity that permeates it. \nThe gallery\, named after the story entitled Descent into the Maelström by Edgar Allan Poe\, has been able to demonstrate its hybrid and complex nature: never static or unilateral\, it became a travelling project in 2012\, expanding also at the service of Art Advisory\, always keeping the cause of support for young artists and the expressive variety of their approaches close to its heart.\nAs with the Estro exhibition that inaugurated the gallery in 2010\, Poli also aims to give voice to artists through their personal language without a particular common thread\, but rather emphasising the variety of media and types of representation and proposing to the viewer a free path\, inviting them to lose themselves once again in that Maelström of materials\, shapes and dimensions\, in balance between disorientation and charm. \nThe exhibition opens with sculpture: L’ordine delle cose (“The Order of Things“) is the work of Andrea Cereda\, who narrates the geometric order behind our reality through his composition. The harmonic rule that binds the stone\, anchored to the ground\, to the metal forms on the wall that\, similar to fragments of an aeroplane\, dialogue with space with paradoxical lightness.\nThe installation Under Water by Alice Olimpia Attanasio includes two paintings and some sculptures that seek to reflect on the condition of fish\, part of which is strongly at risk in our ecosystem\, represented here outside its natural environment in ceramic figures oppressed by cement\, decapitated or portrayed suffering on the canvas.\nThe work of Guido Airoldi concludes the sculptural section scattered through the exhibition. Lèmene reproduces in a mimetic way\, through paper on canvas and board\, the ammonitic stone used to enclose the land plots of Lessinia\, weaving an analogical relationship between sculpture and territory.\nSuddenly\, the vortex leads from three-dimensional works to photography: Mise en abyme: la rovina nella rovina (“Mise en abyme: the ruin within the ruin“) by Nicola Bertellotti questions the “mise en abyme”\, a narrative phenomenon of reduplication of the image that the artist uses to build a story about the ruin within the ruin\, the worn fresco that reflects the crumbling space around it. Tommaso Fiscaletti also uses the photographic medium to tell the story of spaces from a perceptual point of view. Mute #11 transports the viewer from the visual to the auditory by portraying the dialogue between the carousel and the surrounding nature\, a noisy and dynamic context that is stopped and “muted” through its image. The female figure is at the centre of Sara Giannatempo‘s work that exhibits the diptych Filles a parties\, Filles d’amour\, Filles en circulation from the series “Una Nuova Slavitù” (“A New Slavery“)\, a composition that with cinematographic language proposes a field and counter-field between the workers of a brothel and a prominent client with a covered face\, in a sort of narrative tableau vivant of the 1930s.\nFrancesco Minucci reflects on the theme of the mask by presenting the series “Reality Show” in which several characters question the viewer on the sustainability of appearance in the eyes of society\, expressly highlighting the function of the “monk’s robe”.\nVincenzo Todaro takes a further step from the photographic medium\, with girl\, child and doll from the “DSPR” series\, which seems to evoke a residual image\, the representation of a photograph in which the human form sublimates as eroded by time and by the painting that has left its indelible trace.\nIn the variety of pictorial approaches\, there are some themes common to multiple artists. Nature\, for example\, is observed from multiple points of view in the works of Ilaria del Monte\, Matteo Nannini and Gaia Lionello.\nIlaria del Monte in the three works La piccola camera fiamminga\, Doppia Fuga (“The Little Flemish Chamber\, Double Fugue“) and Risvegli (“Awakening“) depicts the almost symbiotic relationship between the body and Nature according to the transience that unites them\, in a figurative and luminous representation enhanced with references to Christian symbolism and classical mythology.\nMatteo Nannini in Riposo nel giardino dell’Eden e Adamo (“Rest in the Garden of Eden and Adam“) from the “Giardini” (“Gardens“) series paints an idyllic and flamboyant plant reality\, a place far from the chaos of our urbanised world\, where man can rediscover his most primal and naked sensations in contact with other species. Gaia Lionello\, on the other hand\, proposes a vision that is as raw as it is realistic. In Terre Sospese\, (“Suspended Lands“)\, she represents glimpses of isolated Nature\, far from coexisting with man\, where a thin painted fog gives a glimpse of the wooden knots of the table. In Save the Tree\, a human figure carries the last mast on his boat\, as if to build a narrative link with those Suspended Lands in which not even isolated Nature has managed to save itself from its executioner\,\nnow forced to redeem itself.\nA critical position is also taken by Fabio Presti\, who in the House on Mars series represents rigid buildings lowered into metaphysical and sandy spaces\, evoking an extraterrestrial reality inhabited by man\, the result of a climatic migration following the catastrophic end of our planet. With a more formal look\, Tina Sgrò‘s work REPERTI (“FINDINGS“) proposes an urban glimpse in which a dusty light scratches the represented space\, returning a worn image and the limits of figurativity\, devoid of human presence. With Imparando a Volare (“Learning to Fly“) by Armando Fettolini\, the artist offers the viewer his vision of lightness\, far from the representation of a subject\, the work appears as a surface in which the rippled matter seems to want to detach itself from the support.\nOmar Canzi also uses a multi-material and informal approach. In UNTITLED\, the artist seems to replicate the surface of a wall enhanced by torn posters and virulent marks of colour\, framing a portion of urban reality. The second work\, The Bluest Light\, represents an abstract synthesis of Street Art aesthetics according to the artist’s personal point of view\, which alludes to graffiti through the colour and the spontaneous speed of the pictorial gesture. Once again\, through a hybrid language\, Elena del Fabbro proposes a story that begins with the digital collages exhibited at the Maelström Gallery and ends with the analogical assembly of Punto di Dolore (“Pain Point“). It is a sort of material evolution that opens the viewer to the full interpretative potential\, placing them in front of a dreamlike imaginary populated by distorted figures.\nThere is no shortage of artists with a strongly graphic taste. Erica Campanella in Sentimento e Verità (“Feeling and Truth“) represents the flower as the pure object of a lost beauty\, portrayed through a nostalgic and evocative filter that seems to make it bloom and illuminate with its own light. Willow with Assolo and Jungle Floor explores a Neo-Pop aesthetic in dialogue with comics and design. Her compositions appear saturated and enamelled\, interacting with the viewer’s gaze\, leading it to bounce uninterruptedly from one side to the other\, struck by a frenzy of colours. Arianna Piazza in her Senza Titolo (“Untitled“) offers an autobiographical study of the body that\, deformed\, gives rise to monstrous biological assemblies. The drawings were in fact made by the artist during a period of particular difficulty linked to her motherhood and seek to represent how inner discomfort can transform our outermost layer. \nIn its plurality of visions\, Poli presents a condensed reality. A gathering of artists who\, over the years\, have built the exhibition narrative of the Maelström Gallery\, gathered in a shared moment and in a common space to honour the memory of the one who in some way has allowed them to express themselves once again\, Luca Poli. \nPietro Salvatore

SUMMARY:Luigi Candiani Prize winners exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features the artworks of the first prize winners and the artist residencies of the Young Artists\, under 35 and Well-known Artists\, over 35 categories. The winner of the first prize for Young Artists is Giuseppe Gallace who won the title thanks to the artwork “The Walk” from 2024. In the Well-known Artists category\, Angelo Farina was awarded the work “A Moment Before” from 2022. On display\, in addition to the canvases of the first prize winners\, there are artworks created during the artist residencies\, assigned by the jury composed of Nicoletta Candiani\, owner and curator of SAC\, Elisabetta Roncati and Marta Mezynska. Winners of the artist residencies in the Young Artists category are Asya Magnaterra and Yirui Fang\, and in the Well-known Artists category Atefeh Khas and Sanda Skujina. \nThe Luigi Candiani Prize was established in 2022 in memory of the great-grandfather of the owner and curator of SAC\, who had established a textile factory in 1938 where the contemporary art space stands. \nFor its second edition\, the Prize set the theme of artistic development as “The inner journey”\, that is: \nThere is A constellation in which the whole history of the world converges in a point: humankind. The past\, the present  and the future merge in order to narrate a universe that is running faster and faster\, a temporality characterized by the desire of reaching something different from what we already own. In which direction will the iperproductivity that catches us lead us to? Can we wake up from this phantasmagoria? Nowadays we are irremediably called back to a process of reconstruction of the fragmentation we live in.\nA time in which our gaze on the world becames undone from the sharp and dizzying feeling of abandon of our life commodification and it addresses to the inner reality that proceeds respecting its own timing. Every moment is the time of what is happening right now and this time concerns an inexorable and rapid revolution that is going to make us the id that we have always been for the very first time.

SUMMARY:Ritual Denim - Elena Monzo
DESCRIPTION:We live in a reality in which the Rite is reduced to sterile repetitions of gestures\, emptied of the symbolic charge that has always been its preserve. Hybridisation\, copying and stratification are the means by which Elena Monzo proposes a new look at rituality\, attempting to awaken that desire that has been dormant in us for too long: the will to look and believe in what we see.  \nRitual Denim is Elena Monzo’s first solo exhibition within SAC’s post-industrial space\, an exhibition of 30 works\, created from 2014 to the present\, that transport the viewer in a whirlwind of dialogue with figures halfway between myth and the contemporary\, embellished with garments and jewels\, evoked by a wide variety of mediums: from Washi paper to copperplate engraving\, from ceramics to fabrics including denim\, the material with which the artist has created the four original works that constitute one of the exhibition’s fundamental nuclei. The path evolved among the main series developed by the artist over the years in order to propose the widest possible vision of her expressive variety and research.  \nElena Monzo’s subjects seem to come from another world\, floating between reality\, imagination and ancient narrative in dances with mannerist and twisted poses that reflect her research in the field of rituality. Through these swirling motions\, the figures change\, intertwining and hybridising with each other to form new shapes\, colours and materials in a fusion that continuously evokes new subjects where others already exist. Not only the aesthetics\, but also the substance of these figures is constantly changing: in their figurative dynamism\, these archetypal women undergo a metamorphosis\, becoming Icons. This is the case of Chloe\, a figure inextricably linked to myth\, whose garments impose a current energy on the ancient and centauric forms of the creature\, eliminating any macabre reference and mutating it into a subject potentially destined for some poster or cover of a fashion magazine: a domesticated Cronenbergian subject. The dialogue between ancient and current is very present in Rugiada\, one of the few works created directly on canvas\, which depicts a being on his knees from whose back a plant apparatus emerges. His back\, covered in eyes\, looks nostalgically to the past\, to a reality that is invisible to us\, but his form goes beyond the human\, pushed towards an uncertain future. A contemporary alter-ego of the providential two-faced Janus. Elena adopts a process of lightening the subjects\, where the ritual repetition of poses\, colours and forms seems to seek to affirm a new collective imagination\, a pantheon of creatures charged with a new femininity: new Icons for a present that is devoid of idols.  \nSupport\, Medium\, and Technique are just three of the words that are useful to probe the material complexity of Elena Monzo’s works. For ten years now\, the artist has investigated various techniques\, from two-dimensional to three-dimensional\, without ever settling on one\, but rather stratifying and hybridising various processes. Paper is often the star of her creations: many of her variants\, of different textures\, colours and prints\, are layered on her works\, dressing the figures represented.\nIt is a medium that becomes a symbol of that complex lightness that distinguishes her aesthetics. To bear the weight of the collages\, the support is often recanvassed or reinforced with rigid materials\, including the Forex of the Korova Milk series\, always placing the paper in the foreground\, to constitute the face of the work. In series productions\, such as copperplate engraving and silkscreen prints\, the paper opens up an intimate dialogue with the figures that populate it\, without limiting itself to the simple iteration of the composition. Again in the prints\, the artist reaffirms her desire to make the subjects unique and iconic\, putting into play “that unrespected rule of copperplate engraving” for which “the copies I have printed always end up being originals\, thanks to post-press interventions such as gold leaf\, watercolour or inks“. In the section of the exhibition dedicated to prints\, there is Moonzoo\, in which a priestess with a wolf’s headdress seems to face the observer\, flaunting her uniqueness and opposing chastity\, a common copy that becomes an iconic matrix\, presenting itself as a bridge between shamanic art and contemporary pop. \nDenim is an original material that the artist has adopted in various ways for the creation of her latest works. A fabric created for manual work\, it became an element of casual clothing during the twentieth century and is analysed with an almost archaeological method in the works on display\, integrating it into the work of art\, giving it an additional aesthetic function. In the core of works\, Ritual Denim appears\, which gives the title to the exhibition\, a huge denim canvas filled with Monzo’s characters\, created from the collection of garments made with the same laser-engraved works thanks to the collaboration with the Development Centre of Candiani Denim\, a leading company in the sector\, with whose fabric the same garments as those of the capsule collection for SAC were made. The same fabric was used by the tailor Vasco Inzoli\, who created three work garments that were then embellished with Luiss jewels.  \nAmong the four original canvases is Coraline Korallion\, a work in which the figure\, contorted in a ritual\, seems to give rise to a coral from her body\, a precious element that is painted in this work\, and not added to the surface. The denim here constitutes the edge of the canvas\, the frame that delimits and encloses the figure in a narrow space that even she seems to suffer.\nNot only in graphic and pictorial works\, but also in sculptural ones such as ceramics and cushions\, Elena Monzo seems to fish from that vertigo effect of which Celant speaks\, conceiving her works as complex hybridisations and stratifications between mediums (1).  \nThe theme of the Journey is both central and twofold in the artist’s poetics. Her experiences abroad are numerous\, especially in artists’ residences that have allowed her to enrich herself\, and then import new materials and concepts into her creative practice. During her residence in Shanghai\, she discovered Washi paper\, which is used for some of her works such as Washi\, in which the composition\, strikingly vertical\, welcomes a dialogue between sign figures and oriental characters\, enclosed by an elegant edging. Through the project with The geography of transformation\, in collaboration with the Treviso fashion designer Cristina Battistella\, the shapes affirmed on Washi paper are projected on quiet and sustainable materials such as silk and tulle in a series of outfits that are exhibited in dialogue with the paper\, highlighting the importance of the relationship between art and fashion rooted in the artist’s poetics. In Japan\, she learned the mastery of working with materials\, reflecting on the dichotomy between art and craftsmanship\, a distinction that is typical of Western thought. In Lebanon\, she experienced the hybridisation between different cultures firsthand\, another element that is often allegorised in her works. Not only as an experience\, the Journey is a key theme of the creative and design phases of the artist’s works. In the Rite of Preparation\, her figures are born from the research and collection of images\, evoked nude on the support\, at their earliest stage. The process of metamorphosis through the garment then follows: the artist dresses her figures\, embellishes them and gives them an identity through the superposition of precious papers and accessories\, letting the original subject breathe and stopping before arriving at the heady threshold of kitsch.\nIn light of all this\, Elena Monzo’s art can certainly not be defined as conceptual. Despite this\, she often finds herself reflecting on recurring symbolic elements that emerge from her works  in an evident way. In the motif of rituality and transformation\, the accessories assembled on the works\, conceived by the craftsmanship of Luiss Perlanera\, become talismans charged with a magical energy that the priestesses evoked by the artist control. Flowers\, stars and precious spiders are Frida Vogue‘s talismans\, adorning her by bringing her representation out of the work\, as bridges between the image and the real. In this way Frida Kahlo\, a famous figure in contemporary culture\, renews her uniqueness through stratification\, becoming a Neo-Icon bearing intimate and strong symbols such as that of motherhood. Another theme that is often investigated by the artist is that of doubling\, envisaged as a coherent dialogue between two copies: SintetiK\, another one of the original canvases edged in denim\, takes back up a subject from the iconography of Die Antwoord\, in which the two artists merge into a unique and androgynous being.\nThe work is in fact configured as a synthesis of the theme of the twin\, which was addressed in 2014 with Bo & Bo\, which is therefore resolved ten years later: the twins become a single hybrid figure\, in form and in sexuality. Elena Monzo proposes an escape from the exasperating decadence that time is landing on\, seeking\, as Battiato sings\, “in the obsessive rhythms\, the key to tribal rites“.  \n(1) Celant Germano\, Artmix. After graduating in painting from the Academy of Brera in 2005\, she specialised in graphic techniques as a Master Engraver. As early as 2002\, she participated in the group exhibition of the Museo della Permanente in Milan: Salon I and then began her career abroad in 2006 with the exhibition Obra Sobre Papel at the Mito Gallery in Barcelona. The following are some of the most important group exhibitions in which she has participated: in Germany in 2008\, Junge Italienische Kunst at the Galerie Blinz & Kramer in Cologne\, Fall Forward\, in Sara Tecchia’s New York studio in 2009 and many others to follow including some Biennials\, that of Postumia in 2010 and that of Soncino in 2019\, up to the most recent ones such as Super S.H.E by Giovanni Bonelli in Milan in 2028\, HUMAN NATURE\, at the Galerie Marek Kralewski in Freiburg and the two exhibitions held at the SAC Profili and Venus in Furs in 2023 and 2024. From 2010 to 2024 Elena’s works were exhibited at important fairs such as the Scope in Basel\, New York and Miami\, Beirut ArtFair\, Art Verona and ArteFieraBologna. The artist has been exhibited not only in group exhibitions\, but also in solo exhibitions such as Inside\, at the Bonelli Contemporary in Los Angeles in 2007\, La Dolce Vita and Dark Venice at the TZR Gallery in Dusseldorf in 2010 and 2014\, Moon Zoo and Stranger Things at the Gilda Contemporary in Milan in 2017 and 2024 and Silk\, La via della Seta at the former Filanda Meroni in Soncino in 2018. Her experiences in artist’s residencies\, during which Elena gathered new elements\, both conceptual and material\, for the creation of her works\, are very important: Kurashiki in Japan in 2013\, Beirut\, Lebanon in 2014 and Shanghai with The Swatch Art Peace Hotel in 2015. Finally\, she has won several awards\, including the Italian Factory Prize for young Italian painting held at the Superstudio-plus in Milan in 2004\, participation in the Cairo Prize in 2010\, and more recently the Combat Prize in 2020.  \n
